There’s an artistic flourish to the Nittardi wines- perhaps owing to the estates ownership by Michelangelo Buonarroti. You might be familiar with some of his work- the ceiling of Sistine Chapel and David both spring to mind. (That’s his visage on the label.) The estate has been known for its winemaking for centuries as well, with bottles of its top end wines traditionally being presented to the Pope.
The estate has undergone a modernization over the last 30 years (though a few bottles of their highest end wine is still given to the Pope), allowing for a melding of cutting edge winemaking with classical sensibilities.
The Belcanto is their entry-level Chianti Classico- a beautiful bottling that shows off the quintessential Tuscan notes with a twist. While the Belcanto is 90% Sangiovese, the remainder is a field blend of indigenous varietals – Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia Nera. The wine is aged in 35 hectoliter botti -huge oak containers roughly 14 times the size of a normal barrel! This allows for the pure, vibrant fruit to shine through. It’s fresh and floral, with a rustic and charming cherry and raspberry core. There’s Mediterranean herbs and grippy tannins that lead to long and vibrant finish.
It's a food pairing dynamo too, with that concentrated fruit and clean finish. It’s great for all sorts of Italian Cuisine, but these warm days and cool nights are begging you to fire up the grill.
King Arthur has a great how-to on grilled pizza- and it’s not only a great option for a fun weekend dinner, but an awesome way to incorporate the fresh and seasonal ingredients this wine loves! Click the pic for a recipe.
James Suckling: 92 Points
“This is red-fruited and a little earthy with notes of chocolate and hibiscus. Ripe and mellow with a medium to full body and grainy tannin structure. Complete and attractive with savory notes at the end. From organically grown grapes.” James Suckling
Vinous Media: 90 Points
“The 2021 Chianti Classico Belcanto is plush, fruity and quite attractive. Ripe plum, spice, cedar and pipe tobacco are nicely dialed up in this racy, succulent Chianti Classico from Nittardi.” Vinous
