Yes that Paolo Scavino, perennial 95-100 point Barolo producer. I know its hard to believe but even the region’s top winemakers don’t drink Barolo everyday. They need a ready to drink food friendly red on a Tuesday night just like you and I. For this reason Enrico Scavino produces his Vino Rosso di Tavola, and as you’d expect from Scavino its outstanding.
So what do we have here? A blend of Nebbiolo (from younger vines in those same 95-100 pt Barolo vineyards) with Barbera, Dolcetto, and Merlot, all estate grown. I opened this beauty at the store to taste with the gang and was instantly struck by how vibrant and delicious it was straight out of the bottle. I quickly swiped the bottle to take home before Drew could get his mitts on it. Hey, I was making pasta with my little man so I had a good excuse. At home, with the benefit of a little air – wow! Blackcurrant, cherry, rose petal, tobacco, and spice aromas bound from the glass. Energetic and open on the tongue, medium-bodied with gorgeous wild berries and supple tannins. There’s great structure and length here too. I left the last glass in the bottle and put it aside, wondering how it would hold up on day two. It continued to shine, with pure fruit, elegance, and brilliant balance.
This is a serious bottle at a silly good price. It was great with pizza of course, but try pairing with braised rabbit pappardelle, or Korean meatballs even.
