So what do we have here? Other than deliciousness in a bottle? 100% Tempranillo, predominately from Rioja Alavesa, the highest part of Rioja with the coolest climate. In these days of global warming, it’s these higher vineyards that are thriving, as the grapes’ ripeness is tempered by bright acidity and intoxicating aromatics.
The aromas here are just wildly complex, with notes of dark wild berries against a background of incense, cedar oil, coffee, licorice, black pepper, cocoa powder, and anise. Medium to full bodied but fresh, with ripe tannins, and a long harmonious finish that echoes the intensity of the ripe dark berry flavors. The aromas and flavors continue to evolve as the wine opens…so pour yourself a glass while you’re making dinner and enjoy its journey over the course of an evening.
There are plenty of food pairing possibilities here, but with this complexity and structure, I’m thinking about a Moroccan spiced lamb dish, a hearty tagine or even cassoulet. With cooler days finally on the horizon, and the richer foods of fall, this wine is a winner!
