This time of year, we often face this situation – you’re looking for a good bottle of wine under $50… something as a gift or to “WOW!” your dinner guests… and a wine everyone will love. Oh, and some nice press because if they don’t know much else, a 95 pt review says, “This is good!”
That’s all? 😊
This year, I tasted through a bunch of wines searching for just such a Jack of all trades… dressed in a tuxedo…
This is THE wine…
Context… it’s all about context…
- Emilio Moro Clon de la Familia 2014 – 94 pts @$450
- Capellanes Parcela El Picon 2019 – 94 pts @ $250+
- Pesquera Millenium Gran Reserva 2019 – 93 pts @ $170+
These are just some of the many other Tempranillo from Spain rated the same or lesser by Jeb Dunnuck or the Penin Guide.
The bottom line is this… do you like lush red wine? Full-bodied and rich? Yet balanced and seductive? Then you should try this gem!
So what do we have?
100% Tempranillo from the Toro region of Spain, grown on 120-year-old vines. The vines grow through 6-9 feet of sand before reaching a 20 cm thick layer of clay. No bugs or pests can survive in the sand, but the clay retains the water needed to feed the vines! The grapes are hand-harvested, rigorously sorted and destemmed before transfer to a variety of oak barrels.
The result is a pure, modern expression of the Tempranillo grape – an ultra-plush texture with boisterous fruit – blackberries, black cherries, mulberries and raspberries – that finishes long and savory. Everything is just so darn near-perfect and balanced… stunning… hmm… must… have… more…
Jeb Dunnuck: 95 Points
“Looking at the 2020 Vatan, it comes from a single vineyard planted in 1900. Raised in barrel, this deep purple-hued beauty offers up a gorgeous array of cassis and darker berry fruits as well as integrated classy oak, roasted herb, graphite, and Asian spice-like nuances. It's a rich, powerful wine yet stays light on its feet and balanced, with beautiful tannins and integrated acidity.” JD
