To say that Jean-Marc Lafage is a good winemaker is like saying Babe Ruth could hit the baseball a little. Lafage is, quite simply, one of the most talented winemakers in the world. Look, it doesn’t take a genius to make great wine from storied vineyards, with all of the money in the world at your disposal. But to repeatedly turn out 90-93 pt rated wines, for under $20? And not just one or two… we’re talking over 80 different 90+ rated wines in the past 8 vintages, all under $20! The man is a genius.
I may not be a genius, but I ain’t stupid! So I loaded up on this gem to start the rose season!
Ok. The package. It’s pretty sweet, isn’t it? The shape of the bottle, the color of the wine, heck, and the glass stopper… makes you just want to pop one open and stick a big old straw in it, doesn’t it? I know. Of course, I don’t do that. No… not me. I don’t have time for straws…
To my liking, this is about as perfect as rose can get, striking the right balance between rich fruit, fine minerality, and racy acidity. No matter which style of rose your tastes lean towards, this will knock your socks off. If it doesn’t? Well, I think perhaps rose just isn’t for you! “White peach, orange blossom, and white flower notes emerge from the 2020 Miraflors. It's another clean, balanced, beautiful effort with bright acidity and a clean, dry finish." JD "Light to medium pink and copper-tinged in the glass, it offers up scents of melon and peach, with hints of strawberry as well. Medium-bodied, it's round and silky in the mouth, showing ample concentration and length on the citrus-tinged finish." WA
Here’s what the winery recommends to serve it with: Spaghettis bolognaise, Pizza jambon fromage, Lasagne à la bolognaise, Ratatouille, Paella, Galettes de sarrasin, Hamburger maison. Okay… not sure about buckwheat pancakes (Galettes de sarrasin), but I get where they are going. Treat ‘em like a savory crepe, filled with cheese, peppers, onions… hmmm… okay, I am on board! Of course, you can put this baby with just about anything you want – such is the beauty of rose!
