A NEW offering from Favorite Gerard Seguin! The domaine can trace its roots back to the mid 1800’s where Alexis Seguin was a winemaker in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as an expert in grafting vines. The phylloxera crisis allowed him to showcase his talents and he was a pioneer in Burgundy grafting the vines to American rootstock to fight the disease. It comes as no surprise that fifth generation winemaker Jerome Seguin focuses first on the vineyards, firmly believing that without careful work in the field, a winemaker is lost. To that end, the soil is worked multiple times during the year, severing any surface roots and forcing the vines to dig deeper. Pruning is fairly severe, aimed to keep yields low and quality of fruit high. After hand-harvesting, the fruit is sorted in the vineyards because, as Gerard Seguin explains, “what's the point of having damaged fruit rubbing against clean fruit while you transport it?”
Um… hmm… y’know, I have never thought about that. Makes total sense and yet few do it. NEW Gerard Seguin Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 2019

Unrated, but certainly superior to the 94 pt Craipillot below...
Lavaux-Saint-Jacques (also written Lavaut) is a 1er Cru vineyard located in the western-most part of Gevrey-Chambertin. Lavaux sits at the entrance to the Combe de Lavaux, a valley that cuts into the Cote d’Or. The valley affects the vineyard in two important ways. Firstly, it gives the vines a southern exposure resulting in maximum sun exposure (most in Gevrey face east). Secondly, the valley acts as a funnel, bringing a cold wind from the west. This slows ripening and gives significant day/night swings in temperature, which increase acidity and complexity in the wine.
Historically, this cooling wind has resulted in wines that are leaner than those of its more esteemed neighbor, Clos St.-Jacques.
You can fill in the rest yourself by now, right? Global-warming. What was once an issue is now a blessing!
This gem comes from 80-90 year-old vines. Seriously old vines! There is plenty of power and muscle to this wine, yet as a hallmark of the vintage, there is loads of dense red cherry and raspberry fruit. The texture is downright velvety. Exotic spices, smoky herbs and fine minerality complete the package. It is darn tempting to drink now, but will reward a little patience.

“From the gravel soils of the Crais area, a tender and precocious wine emerges, which, right from the first year of bottling, reveals almost all the aromatic delicacy that its noble elders – the grand cru wines – only achieve with age. Not so hard on the pocket as a Chambertin, this light wine will lift your soul, and spread joy and laughter when shared with friends over a meal.” Winery note
“Very dark crimson color with a lusciously perfumed nose of red berry compote, yellow straw and floral aromas. Absolutely engaging. The texture here is like velvet; voluptuous with a range of ripe red fruits to black cherry skin; certainly, aspects of fleshy fruit near the pit, complex brown forest floor, rose petal and just a touch of sweet oak as you move towards the finish. The finish is a continuation of the savory red fruits with a lifting calcaire freshness. This wine will be pure pleasure for early consumption.” Importer note
“Produced from 70-year-old vines, this wine is well structured, dense with ageworthy tannins. Wood aging has underlined the structure while also broadening the black-cherry fruits.” WE

Sale $74.99 – Best US Price!

“Craipillot is at the upper exit of the village, at the entrance to Combe de Lavaux, and at the foot of Clos Saint-Jacques. It is located just behind the farm. The soil is made up of marly debris and pebbles from the Combe de Lavaux. It is well drained in the middle by the Grand Vaux ditch.
Craipillot often produces lively, very fruity wines with aromas of liquorice and violet. Less structured than other 1er crus, it is nevertheless powerful with a lot of finesse.” Winery note
“This vineyard is situated just above the Grand Cru vineyards. GREAT WINE!!!; powerful savory compote of cassis and cherry, tea leaf & leather on the nose; a very muscular’ high-energy wine on the palate; thick and plush with a sweet fruity core; calcaire and soil emerge on the finish; great density and complexity.” Importer note
“This small vineyard, just on the edge of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, has produced a rich wine, still with obvious wood aging flavors that will integrate over the next years. The black fruits and structure promise aging, giving a wine that is dense and full. Drink from 2026.” WE Or reply. The wine is available now in Chapel Hill. Wednesday, as ordered, in Hillsborough.
