I love when a blending grape gets a solo act, so you can imagine how psyched I am for this! A beautiful Petite Sirah from maybe the best place in the world to grow it, with one of the most unique agricultural practices I’ve ever encountered, and it’s how much? The dream is real, friends, oh- and it even has a score!

Sourcing from three sustainably farmed vineyards in the Heart of Lake County California, Shannon Ridge is offering one of my favorite expressions of Petite Sirah I’ve ever encountered, and at a price that initially had me wondering what the catch was. It’s sustainably farmed and thoughtfully made, so no cutting corners there. Being outside of the high-rent districts of Napa and Sonoma keeps cost down for sure, but this still seems a little too good to be true. Maybe it has to do with some of their unconventional labor practices…
See, Shannon Ridge likes to incorporate something called “Project Ovis”. The Latin Speakers among you might have figured it out already, but Shannon Ridge has included a large flock of sheep as part of their farming patterns. Kind of a wild idea at first, but that’s basically the greenest way to control cover crops and weeds while also getting some grade-a fertilizer out of the deal. Between that and the laundry list of other initiatives they’ve put into practice, they won last year’s California Green Medal Environment Award!
That’s great and all, but how’s the wine?
Well, It’s pretty dang delicious. Exactly what I want out of a Petite Sirah- bright juicy fruit with a spicy, peppery finish. It’s easy drinking, no brainer juice, but with enough complex cedar on the finish to offer a little extra intrigue. Six months in oak gives it just enough structure to keep these big flavors in line, but man this thing wine is smooth. Honestly, it’s exactly what I’m after in a Petite Sirah!
As far as food pairings go, this is basically perfect with anything meaty. And hey, with St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon, why not some classic corned beef and cabbage? I trust Kenji with my life when it comes to anything beef-related, so I’ve got his brisket breakdown linked in the pic!
“Quite ripe and jammy, this deeply colored wine also sports nicely integrated tannins that balance the intense blueberry and blackberry flavors. Relatively smooth and polished for the varietal” -WE
