Our old friend Erin remarked on a previous vintage, “If you don’t like this wine, you probably just don’t like wine!” Well said!
Jeb Dunnuck wrote of this wine that it, "reminds me of a Côtes du Rhône from Pierre-Marie Clape..."
Um... Hmm... the 90 pt rated 2016 Clape Cotes du Rhone sells for $69 per bottle, on average.
Let's see... same quality... about 1/5 of the price? You can see why this has been a favorite of ours over the years, and why I jumped on it as soon as it arrived! Ridiculous value!
Okay, so what do we have? For starters, this baby is a little unique. This comes from a cooler pocket in the Southern Rhone, Signargues, that is known for its Syrah, rather than the more prevalent Grenache. This baby is 95% Syrah from 30-60 year-old vines, aged completely in tank, and 5% Grenache.
This wine always reminds me of a Crozes-Hermitage – aromas of blackberry, anise and just a hint of bacon will seduce you immediately - this is sexy stuff! Heady aromas of spice and earth give way to a seemingly endless array of flavors – licorice, spice, vanilla, smoke, black pepper. There are some grippy tannins here, so don’t be afraid to pair this with heavier dishes. Of course, good luck finding 90 pt Crozes Hermitage for under $20! Let alone $15!
"Long-time American readers should already know this wine, as it has been a staple in the Eric Solomon portfolio for more than a decade. The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Andezon is 100% Syrah, aged entirely in tank. It's a lush, medium to full-bodied wine bursting with ripe blackberries and blueberries. No, it doesn't have the peppery spice of Syrah from the northern Rhône, but it does have enough cola-like spicy complexity to warrant an outstanding rating. Drink it over the next 3-4 years." Wine Advocate on the 91 pt 2016
