Okay… Catena… you pretty much know the name. They are THE benchmark producer in Argentina, and Malbec is their specialty. Catena pioneered the practice of growing Malbec at different altitudes, with each vineyard site offering different characteristics in acidity, tannin, fruit concentration, etc.. Now, Paraje Altamira may not be a name you have seen on many bottles before. This area of Mendoza, Argentina is to the south of the more famous Uco Valley and adjoining the amazing La Consulta zone. The area has long been known to make exceptional wines, but it wasn’t until the last few years that this area was formally delineated. Now all of the top wineries in Mendoza want to jump in on the newest hotspot. And guess who was already there?
Paraje Altamira is known to produce grapes with intense color, robust tannin structure, along with deep and concentrated flavors. The deep layers of large alluvial river stones, sand, and heavy amounts of calcium carbonate in the soil allows the grapes to maintain a beautiful freshness as they reach optimal maturity. Catena is making the most of these characteristics with this amazing Malbec that is wildly underpriced for the quality.
This is a wine that will have mass appeal, think “party pleaser” or “anytime wine!” The intensity will please a Cabernet drinker, the spiced perfume with appeal to Syrah fans, and the silky, polished finish will delight our Pinot Noir aficionados. You can’t really go wrong. Do you like DELICIOUS??? Yeah, everyone is going to love this, but don’t think for a second that this stuff doesn’t have loads of character. The terroir pairs some of the best features of the Uco and La Consulta regions to make a wine that passionately screams “This is Mendoza Malbec!”
James Suckling: 92 Points
"Ripe, racy berries, potpourri, stone and a touch of white pepper follow through to a juicy, medium-bodied palate with firm tannins and a fruity, expressive finish. Attractive now, but can hold."
