Miguel Merino Jr. took over the reins from his father and has become one of the rising superstars in the “new” Rioja movement. In their recent article, “Rioja’s village wines: The names to know and bottles to seek out.” Decanter highlighted Miguel Merino Jr. and his Vinas Jovenes!
What is the “new” Rioja movement? Simply, it is the same (r)evolution we have seen across the world – young winemakers looking back in time to how wine was made before international distribution and commercialization. A focus on the vineyard first, second and third. Then, a focus on the making of wine. For some reason, Rioja is late to the party. But now that they are getting down, it is quite a party.
Moreso than anything, we are seeing the end of classifications like Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. There’s still some value to them, but, I think, there is too much baggage. When customers see those labels, they think of the “old” Rioja – overoaked, oxidized, lacking in fruit, originality and distinction.
I can think of no better place to re-introduce Rioja to you then with this bottle!
While Vinas Jovenes means young vines, these are hardly that. At 22-30 years of age, they are certainly mature. But hey, if he wants to price this wine like it is really a young vines wine, so be it! This baby explodes with aromas of blackberries, cherries, mulberries and raspberries. Fresh herbs and anise balance the fruit before gliding into a soft, silky finish. Utilizing fairly neutral used oak barrels for aging, you will be hard-pressed to detect any overt oak aromas or flavors.
