[Rich] I drink a lot of Albariño, so much that the gang often say its “so very British!” But really, so very Irish might be more accurate. The name Galicia comes from the Gaelic people that settled there, the same Celtics that landed in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Cornwall. You can even find bagpipes, kilts and red heads in Galicia! I just love Albariño, the best are some of the most aromatically enticing white wines you’ll find anywhere in the world, with enough fruit to be enjoyed by themselves and enough acidity that they can pair with all manner of foods too. But really great Albariño can tend to be expensive. It’s hard to grow grapes in Galicia, its wet and cold there, the climate is much more like Ireland and Scotland than what we might normally consider for Spain. Yields tend to be low, and demand across the world is growing for Albariño as more consumers discover Galicia’s great white grape. So when we tasted this beauty from Burgans I was blown away. I mean, Albariño this good as low as $16.99 - that’s a home run!
The Burgans is super tasty, and a little different to many of the Albariños we’ve offered lately too. Burgans is a custom cuvee made at Martin Codax, one of the top producers in Rias Baixas. It’s 100% Albariño sourced from a selection of sustainably farmed vineyards and growers in Salnes sub-zone in Rias Baixas. The Burgans takes a juicier approach, with lots of ripe apple and peach fruit on top of that classic briney minerality. Accents of white flowers and ginger bring nuance, and crisp vibrant acidity gives that freshness that draws you back for more with every sip. This a crusher, porch pounder, whatever you want to call it. It’s got a screw cap, and that’s good because if there’s more than two of you drinking you’ll need to open a second bottle fast! And at $16.99 a bottle, that’s cheaper than most craft beers these days, so why not?
Vinous Media: 90 Points
"The 2023 Albariño Burgáns, sourced from Val do Salnés, presents herbal aromas with fruit taking a secondary role. Vibrant and indulgent, it offers a palate that balances neutrality with subtle flavor enhanced by malic acidity. Light and vertical, it leaves a refreshing lime finish."
