This Ca’ del Laito bottling uses some of the best fruit available from Bussola’s estate, including declassified wine from top sites like Alto, Soto el Barbi, and Casali. Ancient vines and rare clones form the core of this superb Ripasso. Tommaso claims it’s his rare Corvinone vines that give his wines their depth. This Corvinone grape is quite rare in the region these days, it’s very low yielding and quite challenging to grow so many producers don’t bother. Tommaso loves the grape though, he calls it the “Super Corvina,” it produces the stronger, denser, richer, more perfumed wines that he loves. This 2013 bottling is a blend of approximately 50% Corvinone, with 25% Corvina Grossa, and 25% Rondinella. Initial fermentation takes place in tank, then the juice is transferred into French oak barrels that contain the skins and lees of Bussola’s Amarone, here the wine goes through malolactic fermentation and ageing. The wine picks up more colour and concentration with this process, adding more texture and flavour. The result is a lush opulent red, super juicy and forward drinking, with just enough depth to keep you intrigued. It’s dense and concentrated with plenty of dark berry and plum fruits, yet remains soft and plush on the tongue with velvety round tannins. Drink now, or happily age for another 3-4 years. Try pairing with hearty foods like stews, braised red meats, and stinky cheeses. This is a real crowd pleaser if ever there was one!
