This is a crisp Italian wine that has all the food pairing ability that you would expect from a classic old world white. This is Italian…but so much more. The Alto Adige region that Terlano calls home(along with Kofererhof, Alois Legader, Elena Walch, and many other fantastic producers) has the benefit of several cultural influences and an identity of its own that has consistently focused on quality. This rocky, higher altitude area in the Dolomites makes up one of the smallest DOC’s(quality wine area) in the country. The rocky limestone peaks have crumbled in areas making a wide range of well drained vineyards that make crisp, mineral driven wines. The wonderful natural resources make farming the area difficult but rewarding. Nearly the entire region is dedicated to making top quality wines. Basically, it is just isn’t worth it to produce lower quality wines there. In a small area of high quality producers Terlano consistently stands out as a top value.
So, what about this wine? The Terlano Pinot Bianco expresses the mineral of the soil, the freshness of the cool alpine winds, and the long tradition of winemaking. No fuss winemaking, just hand sorted, hand harvested grapes slowly fermented in stainless steel, NO OAK. You get unadulterated purity. Green apple, chamomile and hints of lime dance around in the glass as you pick up whiffs of saline mineral notes. The fruit flavors carry through on the palate with the addition of some ripe pear and tart quince. The mineral notes on the finish will have you eager for another sip.
The texture of this wine may be the magic in terms of pairing. The freshness makes it a perfect match for sipping solo on a warm day, or pairing with starters and appetizers. The tension and the added mineral feel also allows it to stand up to some pretty rich dishes. You can go Italian and pair with burrata, scallop risotto, scampi, or linguini alla carbonara! Or you could look to the north for influence and pair it with spinach spaetzle with bacon and sage, or pan fried perogies! You have a lot of leeway with this one, I like it paired with chips, guacamole and the beach.
You will want to stock up on this one, as it seems to disappear faster than most. Even if it doesn’t disappear in short order, it holds up well for a refreshing white wine.
Wine Enthusiast: 94 Points
"This wine offers an aromatic journey with scents of sun-warmed green apple, brown pear, and subtle mountain herbs. The palate shines with a refreshing interplay of crisp, vibrant orchard fruit flavors and a lively, invigorating acidity, with a citrus and mineral edge on the vibrant finish. Drink now–2040." — Jeff Porter
