Santenay adjoins Chassagne-Montrachet yet doesn’t enjoy the reputation of its neighbor. With a wider array of soil types, elevation and exposure, Santenay suffers from an identity crisis. Despite its proximity to Chassagne, most of the wine produced is red. And yet… if you look at the map… er, wait. Just look at the picture! To the left of the road is Santenay Les Gravieres 1er Cru. Straight ahead, just past the truck, is the start of Chassagne Montrachet 1er Morgeot. A stone's throw and $50-150 more per bottle!

Bottom line… if you loved 1er Cru Chassagne-Montrachet 20 year ago, this is the wine for you!
With holdings in the 1er Cru Santenay vineyards of Gravieres, la Comme and Passe Temps, Capuano-Ferreri is perfectly positioned to fashion top-notch whites than challenge the supremacy of Chassagne year-after-year. Aromas of almonds and citrus give way to a rich mouthfeel. Thanks to selective barrel-aging, the wine has structure without overt oakiness. Give a little air to the wine by pouring into a decanter. I'd drop it when I started cooking dinner and sip a little along the way, noting how it changes with air and time.
Anyhoo... we're right in between seasons here... so I'm thinking something with mushrooms. Chicken or maybe a rich fish like halibut or sea bass. A white wine cream sauce with shrooms if it's a cold night. Or just sauteed mushrooms with fresh herbs if it's a smidge warmer.

The Santenay Vieilles Vignes Blanc has a lovely, well-defined nose with candle wax, white flowers, citrus peel and apple blossoms scents vying for attention. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with just the right amount of sour lemon to keep it perky on the finish. Well-crafted.
