Oz Clarke, the world’s best wine writer (says me), described Viognier thusly: “If you wanted serious, swooning wine, with texture as soft and thick as apricot juice, perfume as optimistic and uplifting as a mayblossom, and a savoury sour cream richness like a dollop of crème fraiche straight from the ladle of a smiling farmer’s wife – in other words, a wine which just oozed sex and sensuality – Condrieu, from the Viognier grape, was it.”
Yeah… see why I love him?
The problem with Condrieu is it is teeny. 420 acres in total. Sancerre, another “small” region, boasts 6,970 acres under vine! Teeny production, along with high quality and high demand, makes Condrieu quite pricey.
You would pay at least double to get this same wine from Condrieu. Period.
Want a showstopper for the holidays? Look no further.
Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points
Condrieu-like apricots, citrus, flower oil, and spicy notes all emerge from the 2022 Vin De France V De Juvenal Blanc, a medium-bodied, bright, juicy, yet textured and opulent Viognier that has fabulous balance and length.
