The winery, at the heart of the Fuisse village, has been in operation since 1604, with the Vincent family as owners since 1862. With holdings in the most sought-after areas of the region, the Vincent family has been instrumental in successfully gaining recognition for the first 1er Cru classification of the Macon in 2020. Simply, they ARE Pouilly-Fuisse, with wines rivaling those of the Cote de Beaune.
Here's the thing… while this wine is not inexpensive, it is an incredible value. Huh? Truthfully, this compares with wines coming from the more famed region of Puligny-Montrachet. And I don’t mean entry-level Puligny at $50. I’m talking 1er Cru Puligny that’ll set you back $100+. Such as:
- Thomas Morey Puligny Montrachet la Truffiere Premier Cru 2018 – 92 pts BH @ $140 online
- Paul Pernot Puligny-Montrachet "Les Pucelles" 2018 – 92 pts BH @ $150 online
- Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet "Les Pucelles" 2018 – 92 pts BH @ $178 online
“So you are saying this wine is as good as these $100+ wines?” Well… I’m not… how deep do you think my pockets are? I’ve not tasted these others. But Allen Meadows of Burghound has. He is the world’s foremost expert on Burgundy. And he is saying exactly that.
So what do we have? The fruit comes from 30+ year-old vines located in 40+ parcels throughout the Chateau’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuisse. Plots in Pouilly, with a high limestone content in the soil, offer intense perfume yet delicate flavors. Fuisse grapes, where clay is more prevalent, contribute less aromas but add structure ad rich flavors. Each vineyard sites is vinified separately then designated to age in either oak (60% / 25% new) or tank (40%). After aging the final blend is composed.
Remember before when I said this winery IS Pouilly-Fuisse? Well this wine is the quintessential, archetype manifestation of the region.
Burghound: 90-92 Points
"Discreet wood sets off ripe yet cool aromas of citrus confit, floral nuances and crushed fennel. The rich, concentrated and relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a balanced, clean and youthfully austere finale that is shaped by bright lemon-tinged acidity." - Allen Meadows
