I absolutely adore Roussanne. Stolpman Vineyards says it “might be the richest, most decadent white grape in the world of wine. Ripe fruit intensity, and a coating, thick mid-palate deliver a hedonistic “wow” factor not often found in white wines.”
Roussanne is intensely flavored, but hard to pin down in our traditional “it tastes like this” way of description. There are apple and pear flavors along with a distinct tropical note but alsoan umami-like impression of herbal tea and Macadamia nuts. There is richness, yet balance. Acidity, but not overwhelming. With a kiss of new oak, the finish remains long, spicy and mineral.

The only problem is the grape is notoriously fickle to grow. As a result, there is very little of it to be found. And what can be sourced from its ancestral home in the Rhone Valley is extremely expensive. Comparably rated Roussanne from the Rhone run $60-150+!
Lucky for us Ch. Juvenal is located “Off-Broadway” in the Ventoux region. Located in the foothills in the shadow of Mount Ventoux, the vines have a cool microclimate perfect for Roussanne. At this price, you deserve to treat yourself! For pairing, think chicken with morel mushrooms, or scallops in a light cream sauce.

The 2021 Ventoux Perseides Blanc is a bigger, richer white yet still stays vibrant and fresh. A blend of 99% Roussanne and 1% Clairette, it has lots of honeyed peach, quince, and flowery oil notes in a medium to full-bodied, supple, mouth-filling style. It's best enjoyed over the coming year or three.
