The greatest whites in the appellation... but also some of the most interesting. While most producers white Chateauneufs are a blend of grapes, owner/winemaker Laurent Brechet has chosen to pursue a different path. Rather, paths... because he is currently producing four single varietal Chateauneufs in addition to his outstanding entry-level blend. Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Picardin (!) and Clairette. We’ve offered Roussanne and Grenache Blanc... so let’s take a peak at the Clairette!

So... Clairette... hmm... to be honest, in all of my years, I have never seen a varietal bottling. I know it tends to be full bodied with lower acidity and higher alcohol... and Vaudieu tempers those extremes by harvesting early in the season and in the cool morning hours to preserve acidity. At 13.5% alcohol, the wine is certainly kept in check, but still has plenty of mouthfeel... aww heck... let’s see what ol’ Jeb has to say...
Jeb Dunnuck: 96 Points
“checks in as 100% Clairette brought up in equal parts new and used barrels. It's medium-gold hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of white peach, tart pineapple, brioche, and subtle honeyed white flower-like nuances. It's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, pure, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful depth, and a great finish. It's another remarkable white from this talented team that will benefit from a year or two of bottle age and keep for a decade.”
