Domaine Alary - Côtes du Rhône-Villages Cairanne d'Estévenas 2021
Price: $39.99
Denis Alary is the latest in a line of vignerons stretching back 11 generations in Cairanne, and has been called “one of the stars of the Cotes-du-Rhone Village of Cairanne” by the Wine Advocate. Here he uses no new oak, with only 15% seeing any oak; in this case, large demi-muids, with the remainder being brought up in tank.
50% Syrah / 50% Grenache. The famed mistral winds bluster through the Cairanne vineyards, keeping yields naturally low, resulting in potent concentration. The winds also keep the vineyards cool, protecting the heat-adverse Syrah. Powerful but not heavy, with spicy, mocha, and fresh herb flavors perfectly balancing with the black and blue fruit profile, this is a serious mouthful of wine for sub $30. I am absolutely craving braised short ribs here...
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
“The 2021 Cairanne L'Estevenas is a 60-40 Syrah-Grenache blend that utilizes some of the oldest Syrah vines in Southern Rhône (planted in 1961). Incorporating 50% whole clusters and made only in concrete, the wine offers up intoxicating aromas of cracked pepper, ripe cherries, violets and wild blueberries. It's medium to full-bodied, wonderfully silky in feel, with a long, lingering finish. It's a real showstopper...”
