"All Grenache that's resting in used demi-muids, the 2022 Gigondas Clovis Saurel is another killer wine, with a huge nose of ripe strawberries, exotic blue fruits, spring flowers, and sappy herbs. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, layered, incredibly seamless Gigondas revealing integrated tannins, a terrific sense of freshness and purity, no hard edges, and a great finish. A domaine located on the lower plains of Gigondas, Domaine Saint-Damien releases four Gigondas, their Vieilles Vignes, which is a blend of the single vintage, two single vineyards, the Les Souteyrade and La Louisiane, and lastly and most recently, the Clovis Saurel. All the wines are largely Grenache and destemmed, and aside from the Clovis Saurel, which is aged in demi-muids, are brought up in foudre and tank. These are brilliant, layered, textured Gigondas that represent insane values."

"Entirely crafted from old Grenache Noir vines, the 2022 Gigondas Clovis Saurel was macerated for seven weeks and matured for 15 months in large barrels. Evoking a deep, earthy bouquet of cedar, tobacco, oak, smoke and spices mingled with carnal notes, it's full-bodied, rich and concentrated with a fleshy core of fruit and structured tannins that bring some structure and power, concluding with a long, tobacco-inflected finish. This ripe, somewhat overripe Gigondas will offer a broad drinking window."

"The 2022 Gigondas Clovis Saurel is a head-turner. This Grenache-only cuvée, first made in 2011, is named after Romain Saurel’s grandfather, who founded the winery. It is an assemblage of different parcels from old vines with an average age of 90 years. After 49 days on skins, this beauty will age at least 15 months in Austrian oak demi-muids. Ripe red and black fruits, licorice and orange blossom tea all run through this seamless Gigondas. Bold and rich, it contains 15.2% alcohol."
