This is the most exciting discovery of the year!
Actually, I discovered the wine years ago vacationing in Spain. I was blown away… then saddened to find out there was no distribution in the US.
That changed a year ago… sort of… there is very little of the wine produced, so the importer has only been selling it to a handful of retailers in New York.
But… guess who owns the winery? Raul Perez! Without question, one of the best winemakers in the world, he is also an old friend of the store. Seeing as we are one of the top accounts for his wines in the US, the importer granted us an allocation.
Rich’s comment? He was at a small tasting with the importer and he happened to have a bottle with him… knowing we had it on order, they ripped the cork. Rich was poured the customary taste… and then he wanted more!!!
So what do we have? Based in the Navarra region of Spain, the original owners founded the winery to preserve the patrimony of old vine Garnacha. Many of these ancient vines were being ripped out in favor of Tempranillo – gasp! I hate that story, but it has happened all over the world. Thankfully, forward-thinking people understand one key thing about these old vines… they produce rocking good wines that cannot be matched by little baby vines!
The vines here date back to 1903! Naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in large barrels. The barrels range from new to 15 years old, with around 10% being replaced each year. It’s a little geeky… but the range of barrels adds complexity to the wine. Loaded with juicy, almost crunchy fruit… blackberries, cherries… the wine is super fresh and vibrant. The oak is unnoticeable to the palate, but rounds out the edges making this perfectly accessible for pop and pour! I suspect it will age for another 7-10 years. If you can keep your hands off it…
“a Garnacha selection of their organic and biodynamically farmed plots (but not certified), fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrel for 18 months. It's clean and aromatic and has herbal freshness, a certain leafiness that even makes me think of Mencía. The oak is neatly integrated and folded into the wine, which comes through as balanced and elegant, with a Mediterranean twist that is characteristic from San Martín. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with very fine, chalky tannins.” WA on 2018
