Face a la Mer literally translates to “In front of the sea”, which is where most of us probably wish we were right now. It’s an appropriate name for a Picpoul as well, not only for the regions proximity to the sparkling blue Mediterranean, but also the sea-spray invigoration that comes from each sip. Though I think I’d get some pushback on it being the absolute best beach wine, I can’t think of a better contender for the crown.
Granted, this is one of those wines I worry that I tasted under too-ideal circumstances. After a sweltering uphill bike ride home last night, pulling this ice cold bottle out of my backpack and pouring a glass was one of the nicest things I’ve done for myself lately. Bright, zippy citrus with a beautifully quenching acidity- I could have drank the whole bottle in one go. Seriously- close your eyes and take a sip and all of the sudden you’re on a boat in open ocean with a cool breeze swirling around you.
Part of what really strikes me about this wine is the use of a little bit of Terret- another Languedoc varietal known for it’s aromatic potential. I was actually a little caught off guard by how floral and fruity this wine spelled- lovely concentrated tropical notes that accentuated the zing of citrus flavors and bright minerality. It’s a just a little more complex than a straight up-and-down in a way that makes it infinitely more compelling.
