Long story short… I have a smoking good deal on this wine… that expires tomorrow! And I committed to a chunk of it, so am just slashing the price so it’ll come in… and go right back out again! At darn near the best price in the country, this is a great deal!
And a fabulous wine. Personally, I love the wines of Alsace, France. A region rich in gustatory tradition, Alsace combines the best of its German influence with all the glory of French haut cuisine. As luck would have it (or fate, I suppose), the region is also blessed with incredible wines. After thousands of years, the residents of Alsace have melded the two seamlessly together – every wine has its food and every food has its wine!
While Gewurztraminer is what most people think of when considering the region, for me it is Pinot Gris that is the star. Yes, it is the same grape as Pinot Grigio, but that is the only thing they have in common. Pinot Gris from Alsace might as well be a different grape entirely, as the wines made here are so vastly different from those made in Italy.
Here, we have a wine suited for the rich dishes of the region. Flavors are spicy, musky and exotic, with considerable weight for a white wine, as well as the slightest hint of residual sweetness. (really just a hint though…)
You first know something is different when you glance at the color – a deep straw yellow gives a hint to the weight of the wine. Expressive and intense aromas of apricot, peaches and mango give way to a lush, velvety textured wine. Bright acidity leaves you mouthwatering as well as setting up the requisite food pairing opportunities.
So what about food? Traditional fare might include chicken or veal served with a mushroom cream sauce, pâté or foie gras. Or game birds like quail or pheasant. Some more modern takes… monkfish with saffrom, lamb curry, chicken tikka masala, thai curry… just go rich and full and have at it! The perfect winter white!
James Suckling: 92 Points
A charming dry pinot gris that has a striking hint of copper color. Ripe, generous and juicy with just a touch of tannin that helps anchor the richness. Almost silky finish with hints of toasted almonds and smoke. Drink or hold.
