Fun Fact: Owner Elisabetta Geppetti was gifted the winery at age 20 from her father-in-law, who wasn’t interested in winemaking! Ten years later she became the first woman to be president of an Italian consortium. Today, her oldest daughter Clara assists her. Girl Power!!!
I have been trying to get this winery into North Carolina for years, ever since my family drank a couple bottles at a lovely restaurant in NYC. Finally, they’re here!
The Morellino di Scansano is part of the larger Maremma appellation. While many of the wines bearing the Maremma name contain a large portion of Bordeaux grapes, this is Sangiovese country. “Morellino” is from “morello”, translated as “little dark one”, a nickname for Sangiovese. Brunello, another form of morello, makes its home in Montalcino, just an hour’s drive north.
With a southwest orientation and slightly warmer climate, the Sangiovese grown here is riper than its northern siblings. But this factor is mitigated by the altitude and proximity to the Mediterranean coast.
Okay, let’s dive in! 90% Sangiovese / 10% Cillegiolo and Alicante, entirely raised in stainless steel. This preserves the aromatics… and wowsa! Those are some aromas! Cherry, raspberry, red currant, blood orange and violets all swirled together with sweet spices. The vineyard’s elevation shows in the bright acidity and fine, smooth tannins.
The winery recommends pairing with Tuscan ribollita or stuffed calamari. Ribollita, of which recipes abound on the web, is a hearty soup made with veggies, beans and day-old bread. Cannellini beans, kale, onions, carrots, celery… some tomatoes… garlic, thyme, bay leaf, oregano… parmesan rind… oh my… I think I know what I am having for dinner tonight!
