Le Pupille is located in Grasseto, part of the larger Maremma region. Pupille sits roughly 30 miles southeast of Bolgheri, with a similar exposition, soil and weather. You know Bolgheri – its home to Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Guado al Tasso. As evidenced by the Pupille’s 99 pt Saffredi, Maremma can produce equally stunning wines.
Fun Fact: Owner Elisabetta Geppetti was gifted the winery at age 20 from her father-in-law, who wasn’t interested in winemaking! Ten years later she became the first woman to be president of an Italian consortium. Today, her oldest daughter Clara assists her. Girl Power!!!
I have been trying to get this winery into North Carolina for years, ever since my family drank a couple bottles at a lovely restaurant in NYC. Finally, they’re here!
While Sangiovese plays a supporting role in many of the region’s famous wines, here it is the sole actor in a starring role. The warmer Mediterranean climate encourages Sangiovese to produce prolifically. The key is vigorous attention to controlling yields through green harvesting (dropping fruit from the vines while still ripening). The result is a wine that shows Sangiovese’s more robust side without losing its core. I might also add it is flat-out delicious!

“This all-Sangiovese wine is celebrating its 25th anniversary. I am told it's made with a Burgundian model in mind. The Fattoria le Pupille 2021 Poggio Valente offers good fruit concentration, freshness and an open-knit personality. The wine completed 20 days of fermentation with light work on the cap in terms of punch-downs and pump-overs in stainless steel. It then ages in tonneaux with only 20% new oak. There is plenty of red fruit character along with iris, blue flower and earth, and the tannins are present, albeit powdery. Elisabetta Geppetti says the challenge of making Sangiovese in this warm part of Tuscany is establishing a "point of light" in the wine.” WA
