Dolcetto is misunderstood and underappreciated, so even the best wines like this one are incredibly affordable. Lower in acidity and tannins than Piedmont’s more famous Nebbiolo grape, more floral and elegant than Barbera, Dolcetto is the everyday wine of Piemonte. This beauty comes from the Boschis family’s 1.7 hectare organically farmed plot in the famed Prey Cru. Boschis’ 30+ year old vines here are planted at 1500+ ft in elevation on southwestern facing slopes. Yields are low, tiny in fact, just 500 cases of this wine were produced and we have 12 of them!
This 2019 bottling is just stunning, encompassing all that I love about Dolcetto and a little more. Dazzling aromatics captivate you from first whiff, with blueberry, blackberry, dark plum, lavender, Lapsang tea, and gravelly minerals lifting from the glass. Give it a swirl and the flavors expand, darker broodier fruit notes, ripe but not heavy, with more spice and a little anise. Silky and seamless on the tongue, wonderfully lifted and bright with a long fresh finish that seems to last a minute. You can enjoy this beauty with a light chill on a warm day. And it’ll pair perfectly with everything from grilled foods and charcuterie to a simple salad and pizza. Gorgeous now with just a little air, and you can expect a Dogliani of this quality to age another 8+ years too! It’s a sensational buy for any Italian red fan.

“The 2019 Dogliani Superiore Vigna dei Prey is packed with rich scents of blueberry, blackberry jam, gravel, lavender, spice, menthol and chocolate. In 2020, the Prey is brisk and beautifully delineated, a wine of persistence more than just body. It, too, is impressive. Drink 2022-2029.” - V

"The Boschis Francesco 2019 Dogliani Superiore Pianezzo - Vigna dei Prey reveals lovely darkness and freshness, with punchy dark blackberry fruit to drive the message home. There is a raw and natural character that only the Dolcetto grape can bring. This, along with its acidity and freshness of fruit, is what ultimately makes it so food friendly, especially with a pizza or an easy pasta." - WA
