The Alessandria family has a rich history in the Barolo region dating back to 1870 when they first purchased the estate located around the hilltop town of Verduno. The property is still family owned and operated to this day. Owner Gian Battista, together with his wife Flavia, his brother Alessandro and his son Vittore proudly carry on their ancestors' tradition and passion for wine making. Their wines are made from estate grown grapes, “A great wine comes from a great vineyard”: this has always been Gian Battista's firm belief. What I find most compelling about Alessandria's wines (beyond the incredible prices) is their purity and balance. Their wines are impeccably balanced, the fruit is always full of pep and life without being masked by an overuse of new oak.
While their Barolos are highly sought after, it is this small-production gem that I look forward to each year. With just under 1,000 cases produced, we are lucky to get a whopping 10 cases.
Prinsiot is made from young vines within the estate’s holdings, this year from the Verduno vineyards of Neirane and Pisapola. First produced in 1964, this gorgeous wine came to be for two reasons. Firstly, young vines don’t produce grapes with the requisite concentration and complexity to be used in Alessandria’s Barolos. Secondly, we can’t drink Barolo every night! While their Barolo need years in bottle to soften up, Alessandria’s Prinsiot is ready to drink now!
Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate rightly extolls the virtues of pairing this beauty with a simple meal of roasted chicken. I’d also add as options: Spinach Linguine with Mushrooms, Roasted Duck Legs served with pasta, Herb-Crusted Pork Chops… ok, is it dinner time yet?
