Greywacke (pronounced “grey-wacky) was founded in 2009 by Kevin Judd, the founding winemaker at the legendary Cloudy Bay. With 25 years at the helm, Kevin did as much, or more, than anyone to elevate New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to the status it holds today. And yet, with Greywacke, his aim is to interpret the famous Marlborough style – ripe, textural and scrumptious – “with the volume turned well down.”
Now, this certainly doesn’t imply the wine is subtle. After all, it is Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand! It’s just that in dialing back the extremes, the wine is able to reveal more nuanced and complex notes. Passionfruit and guava, pear and peach, along with hints of elderflowers and citrus. A portion of the wine undergoes fermentation in old oak barrels, Adding a creamy textural mouthfeel to the wine.
In short, you may have drunk a lot of Sauvignon Blanc, but you’ve not drunk many, if any, better than this!
“This stunning white is aromatic, fresh and intense, with notes of lemon curd, yuzu, peach, ripe melon and honeysuckle that are effortless and mouthwatering, backed by lemongrass and candied ginger notes on the long, expressive finish.“ WS on 94 pt 2021
