Guillaume refers to this as a "Baby Chateauneuf du Pape"... I've often wondered, and asked, what the fruit source is here. Fifty year-old vines on a south-facing plateau... doesn't sound like Cotes du Rhone... Perhaps he is telling us? Hmmm...
In any case, this is just impressive. Fifty year-old vines provide plenty of intensity and complexity. No need for oak here, so none is used. The fruit is just ridiculous... I had to keep checking the bottle to make sure I hadn't opened their Chateauneuf by mistake. (The only downside to the strikingly beautiful, but way too similar labels). 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. It's that 20% Syrah that gives this wine a smoky note, along with some backbone. No wonder the wine is call "le Hardi" - "The Bold"! Dark blackberry and cherry aromas give way to a powerful wine with loads of savory garrigue notes. This baby offers a powerful array of ripe, briary fruit combined with garrigue – but the wine is impeccably balanced and caresses your palate on the long finish. In essence – a perfect Rhone red for matching with just about any dish you can throw at it!
