Ignore the DWWA score… what’s important here is who Gusbourne beat in this competition… same judges.
Besserat de Bellefon, Boizel, Henriot, Lanson, Jacquart, Charles Heidsieck, Moet & Chandon, Nicolas Feuillatte, Perrier-Jouet, Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot.
That’s an impressive list! And an expensive one too, with some of the bottlings costing upwards of $200!
And Gusbourne smoked ‘em!
“The aromatic fruit and flowers apparent in this wine’s scents seem to have seeped from beds of cool, almost icy moss – Chardonnay restraint is redoubled in these high latitudes. Acidity once again provides the architecture of flavour, but it’s what is engraved in that acidity which intrigues: orchard fruits combined with an almost severe citrus purity, a seaside freshness, and an unmistakable stoniness, too, which lingers and detains after the fruits subside. It’s a wine of remarkable assurance and accomplishment.” DWWA
James Suckling: 93 Points
Wonderfully vibrant pear fruit with notes of garden herbs and snow peas. Although this has wonderful juiciness on the palate, it is sleek, cool and very elegant. Minty freshness at the long, crystalline finish. A 100 % chardonnay that was matured on the lees in bottle for more than 33 months. Drink now.
Decanter: 92 Points
Toasty on the nose with orange zest, blossom plus a hint of burnt sugar. Citrus, melon and steamed rice on the palate, with depth of brioche and an umami undertone. It finishes long and clean with a pinch of white pepper spices on the tip of the tongue.
