91 pts Tim Atkin - "New to the range of impressive reds from La Roncière, this is an 85/15 blend of grapes from Licantén and the Malleco Valley. Delicate, floral and ethereal, with an engaging combination of pomegranate, goji berry and redcurrant flavours and the faintest kiss of vanilla oak. 2024-28."
La Ronciere is, to be blunt, a force of nature.
Founded in 1949, the family owned and operated winery is part of the “new Chile” – a revolutionary turn in the country’s wine scene and a pivotal player in Chile’s increasing viticultural reputation. Consistent innovators and pioneers, they planted their Idahue estate in the relatively unknown commune of Licantén. Just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, La Ronciere capitalized on the cool, maritime climate and beautiful soil, receiving recognition both internationally and at home. A short six years after breaking ground, Chile has officially created the Licantén DO and critics are raving about these wines!
Their cool climate pinot is easily one of the best on the market at its price. Yes, it is fruit driven and delicious, but this wine is smart. It is reading well above grade level. It is doing the NYT Sunday Crossword in ink. Tim Atkin calls it “ethereal”, a word that I think perfectly describes this Pinot. It has such a sublime quality to its concentrated and precise fruit, all in concert with these exotic floral tones. It reminds me of some of my favorite coastal California pinots- albeit at half the cost!
