Mail Road Description
Mail Road is one of the most exciting projects happening in Santa Barbara. Winemaker Matt Dees, after stings at Craggy Range and Staglin, has put down roots in the Sta. Rita Hills to make some of the most impressive wines coming out of Southern California. Partnered with one of the unsung heroes of the region- vineyard manager and “grape whisperer” Ruben Solorzano, he’s taken on some of the most challenging sites in the area.
Their efforts have been rewarded, and nowhere is that more apparent than their beautiful chardonnay- an ethereally concentrated wine that showcases the exceptional fruit at their disposal. With 40% malolactic fermentation, it spends 12 months in barrique to create a modern and elegant wine that showcases stony and saline notes underneath impeccable citrus and apricot. I am most impressed by how they’ve manage to balance richness with acidy, creating something that combines the intense, heady fruit with luxuriant vibrancy that has to be tasted to believed.
Jeb Dunnuck: 95 Points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills offers a richer, nicely oaked profile that includes honeyed stone fruits, toasted spice, crushed stone, and salted citrus-like nuances. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, and has a concentrated, mouth-filling profile that's grounded by a beautiful spine of vibrant acidity. It benefits from air, and this is another awesome Chardonnay from this team that readers will absolutely love.”
