The name “Weon” is a reference to what might be the most ubiquitous word used in the Chilean culture. It roughly means “Dude” or “Bro” but it’s used as a noun, a verb or an adjective in different settings.
When it’s 90 degrees with 90% humidity outside… when your hair gets all frizzy and just sticks to the sweat on your neck… when all you want is that light, refreshing, relatively-lower-alcohol red to whisk you away to a cooler place and time; this is what you’re envisioning! But why take my word for it when you can take the word of Luis Guitérrez; maybe the world’s most respected reviewer of South American wines? Since the 2016 vintage, he’s only rated TWO other South American red wines 92 points that sell for $16 or less… And one of those is made by the same producer, Viña Maitia! High Points + Low Price= DING DING DING!!! Insane Value Alert!!!
David Marcel has been making “Pipeños”, or lighter-bodied, easy-drinking reds in the Maule Valley of Chile since 2012. They practice all organic farming on their 60-100 year-old bush vines. The fruit is hand-sorted, then de-stemmed and fermented in concrete vats to keep the fresh fruit characteristics prominent. They ferment with all native yeasts and use only a minimal amount of sulfites to stabilize the wine. For those of you looking for a “Natural Wine”, I’d classify this as entry-level in that category. Organic, dry farmed, native yeasts, minimal sulfites, no added color or flavors… About as natural as it gets!
I love to put a little chill on Weon before serving it. I’d say 55-ish degrees would be ideal. While it’s great to quaff all by itself, consider anything that might pair with Pinot Noir as a good pairing for the Weon as well. Leaner proteins like chicken or pork… Fattier fishes like salmon or tuna… Or one of the most prominent foods in South America, a nice meaty empanada!
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
“One of the components of the Aupa Pipeño is also bottled separately as the 2022 Weon Carignan. It was produced with grapes from Loncomilla in Maule from a field blend of regrafted vines that contain some vines of País from a vineyard that delivers wines with freshness. It has fine tannins, a medium body and moderate concentration, and it can be drunk straight away. 6,000 bottles produced.” WA
