What makes Mastrojanni’s Rosso so compelling, and unique, starts with the wineries approach to the wine. Mastrojanni takes their Rosso seriously, dedicating a single vineyard entirely to its production. This allows them to focus on crafting a wine that is meant to be drunk young, rather than rushing to market a wine that started as Brunello, but didn’t merit the designation. The result is a serious, yet remarkably approachable wine. And one that ends up tasting a whole lot more like Brunello than the rest of the pack, just with more brightness and less oak. Tasted next to some pricey 2016 Brunellos recently, it was this Mastrojanni Rosso that I really wanted to drink (and happily did so). Crimson red in the glass with striking aromas of cherry, raspberry, violets, delicate spice notes, and fresh minerals. A supple palate follows that’s juicy, ripe, and packed full of red fruits. Medium-bodied and wonderfully balanced with a light savory edge, a fine core of tannins, and a minute long finish that’s fresh with limestone minerals. Incredible now and it will cellar for another 5 years easily. Sensational Sangiovese, I’m buying it by the case load.
Mastrojanni Description

"The Mastrojanni 2021 Rosso is full-bodied and delicious, doling out sensations of ripe raspberry, black cherry, baking spice and botanical herb before a licorice close. It’s rather concentrated but boasts a weightless finesse thanks to velvety tannins. Drink through 2028. Abv: 14.5%"

"The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with a darkly alluring blend of sweet herbs, menthol and tobacco complicating dried cherries and currants. This is an elegant and seductive effort with velvety textures and depths of ripe red and black fruits underscored by saline minerals and spice. It finishes structured and long, showing significantly more depth than the average 2021 Rosso. It ends with fine-grained tannins and a balsamic tinge." - Eric Guido
