From Portugal. Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. I know... huh? Don’t worry about it. I’m not familiar with some of those grapes either. But this wine flat out blew me away, starting with the cool packaging (you’ll see...). On first sip, the wine explodes with creamy cherry and black raspberry flavors. Talk about a lip-smacker! Fine tannins on the finish support more than a hint of exotic spices.
All pretty darn tasty... but then... whoa! What happened?
It’s what I like to call the “light switch moment” - all of a sudden the wine just changes, expanding in both flavor and body, getting creamier and more complex in the blink of an eye. Most often, this happens with oak aged wines with considerable tannins. Considering this is only 20% aged in oak (and all of that 2 and 3 year old used oak), and the tannins are so silky, I just wasn’t expecting it in this bottle. It was worth it from the first sip, but after 20 minutes of being open... I bought everything they had left!
