Here’s a producer who is a perennial favorite of the toughest critics out there - Philippe Colin’s Burgundy wines receive between 90-94 point scores from the likes of Burghound and Vinous Media. These are wines that retail between $140-300… compared to this $20 stunner – Philippe’s terroir-driven motif is evident here too! How can that be?? This is from a different hemisphere! It’s all in the similar sandy soil, same southern exposure, and 14-year-old vines that produce concentrated, expressive fruit.
He found this 64-hectare farm in Franschhoek, South Africa in 2005 and analysis showed it was perfect for Chardonnay. On a slope at the foothills of the Wemmershoek Mountains, sandstone and quartzite dominate, there’s lots of sun for ripening but the bordering ridges provide a cooling tunnel for the vineyards. Biodiversity abounds in this estate as well! Any part of the farm not under vine is planted with plum trees.
So what about this wine makes it the new team favorite? It shows ripe stone fruits, mandarin orange, hazelnut, flowers and a strong element of exotic spice oils on the nose. Then surprisingly dry, even bracing, on the palate, but very dominated by its spicy oak character (Colin uses 450-liter Rousseau Piano oak barrels). A broad, lightly toasted style, with creamed pear and apple fruit flavors that fold into a warm brioche and butter-accented finish. A gastronomic experience you shouldn’t miss.
