This is the most requested Riesling we carry. When it’s missing from the shelf, we hear “Do you have any of that Riesling with the fish?” – Classic. So, we’re making sure everyone gets what they want! Dry Australian Riesling, anyone?
Australia, and especially Clare Valley, is the leading expert on making the whites that are as dry as their deserts. Especially Riesling which is naturally high in acidity and benefits from the cool climate and clay soils of Pikes estate vineyards along the Polish Hill River. There is always a tell-tale finish of talcy minerality that quenches and needs to be quenched all at the same time. It’s astounding. One of a kind.
Pikes is a must-have in the fridge if this kind of ultra-dry white is what you love to reach for. This brand practically defined the category, having been making this exact wine for 38 vintages. They must have perfected it because the scores keep going up! Lemon and lime fruits mix with hints of wild flowers and dried herbs on the nose. The palate shows great length and depth with more lime, passion fruit, white flowers and fresh rosemary. The wine finishes with zippy natural acidity, and a minerality that will reward medium to long-term cellaring. When the flavor and acidity is this vibrant in a value wine, however, my philosophy is ‘why wait?’. Try pairing with spicier foods, curries, even Mexican goodies! Pikes suggests pairing it with South Australian Oysters, but I’m sure any Oyster would do – anyone having a boil soon? Grab some! This white does it all.
James Suckling: 94 Points
“Wonderfully fragrant nose of lemon blossom, then juicy and vibrant on the sleek and super-straight palate, this is a prototypical Clare Valley dry riesling with a lot of lime fruit and a very zesty finish.”
Decanter: 93 Points
“Now in its 38th vintage, Traditionale is Australia's best-selling premium Riesling. While not as incredible as the 2021 vintage (squirrel some away if you can find it), this is still a great-value, ageworthy drop from a fine, cool year. Bone-dry with a perky grip of lime juice acidity, orange blossom lift and crisp flavours of lemon sherbet and wet river stones. A great aperitif for shellfish.”
Wine Enthusiast: 92 Points
“A vibrant, transparent perfume of lime zest, white blossoms, orange essence and chalk leads. Racy acidity on the palate cuts through a slippery texture, leaving tangy citrus flavors lingering long on the finish. Highly refreshing and a bargain for the quality.”
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
"Shows ripe peach, melon and yellow apple flavors accented by mango and orange blossom notes on a smooth, juicy frame, while pretty spice notes of cardamom and honeysuckle linger."
