I’ve talked about the Raats brothers before, specifically how they were pioneers with cultivating Loire varietals in South Africa. Almost exclusively focused on high-quality Chenin Blanc and Cab Franc, brothers Bruwer and Gavin Raats continue to impress critics with their focused, terroir driven wines that showcase incredible depth of flavor.
The Jasper is both a continuation and a deviation for Raats. While it holds true to their pattern of robust, focused reds, this is the only wine they produce that is not either 100% Chenin Blanc or Cabernet Franc. It feels a little off to call it a “Bordeaux Blend” given their focus on Loire varietals, but it’s accurate. Rather an old Bordeaux blend, as we don’t see much Malbec in Bordeaux any longer. Jasper is a blend of primarily Cab Franc, equal chunks of Malbec and Cab Sauv, and then a pinch of both Petit Verdot and Merlot. 16 months in new oak gives it a wonderful structure and emphasizes the robustness on display here, giving everything a wonderful harmonious quality despite the massive flavors.
And yes, this wine wants meat! I have a lot of opinions regarding barbecue. But I’ll defer here to the South African Braai! Literally just grab some proteins, get a fire going, and start cooking surrounded by friends (and wine!)
