Year after year, Sabon’s Reserve Chateauneuf du Pape stands at the top of the value mountain… heck, it stands towards the top of the mountain overall! For price and performance, there are few, if any, that match.
What makes this Cuvee particularly compelling for me, and apparently the critics, is its balance of both style and overall composition. Of course, it all comes from the vineyards, in this case Montolivet, where the soil is red clay and large stones (the famed galets, pictured) and Les Bousquets, which is primarily sand. Sandy soils like Les Bousquets are known for producing elegant, extravagantly perfumed and vibrant wines. The cool clay combined with the warming galets results in powerful, structured wines. Yin and yang. Put them together and you have Sabon Reserve!
80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre from 60-75 year old vines. The wine is aged in a mixture of 250, 400 and 600 liter barrels of various ages. Again, the aim here is balance and complexity, here given by the range of oak profiles.
Only 176 cases are imported of the 850 cases produced. We have 3 of them! Get it while you can!
“Inky in hue but resoundingly floral and packed with red berries and black cherries, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve is full-bodied and rich, yet it never seems heavy or overdone, with silky tannins and refreshing savory hints of herb, Asian spices and cracked pepper on the lengthy finish. It's probably the best value among the various cuvées this year.” WA on 2017
“The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve is largely in the same ballpark and has terrific notes of blackberries, smoked earth, garrigue, and pepper. It’s based on 80% Grenache and 10% Syrah and Mourvèdre brought up in foudre and cuve tronconique tanks. More concentrated as well as focused, it's medium to full-bodied, has brilliant concentration, ripe, present tannins, and a great finish. It's another awesome wine from this estate.” JD on 2017
