We have a triple-threat Gruner on our hands here that's bigger (33% more wine than a 750mL bottle!), a bargain, and classically satisfying! It truly doesn’t get much more classic than this, because this wine's home defined what proper Gruner Veltliner should taste like. Such a distinguishable flavor profile that this northern-most winegrowing region, Weinviertel, became the first designated area for regionally typical wine in Austria. Basically, the first Austrian appellation, or DAC. And the largest. It accounts for half of the worldwide vineyard area of Gruner Veltliner and has become synonymous with the signature ‘peppery-spice’ aroma, combined with a fruit-driven bouquet and refreshing acidity that characterize Weinviertel DAC Gruner Veltliner. Ruttenstock shows off all these features, and much more than it has any right to...
Within the Weinviertel DAC, Ruttenstock hails from Röschitz – a cool-climate region close to the Austrian/Czech border at the foothills of the Manhartsberg mountain ridge which is dominated by primary rock and loess soil, responsible for a denser, creamy texture and brisk minerality. Similar to Sauvignon Blanc in the heady grapefruit and lemon notes, and snappy body, but with white pepper nuance instead of the grassiness of SB. The spiciness overlaps with the citrus along with green apple, melon and white flowers. On the palate, these flavors finish with a salty mineral tinge that is clean, dry and fresh. It’s aged about two months on the lees in stainless steel. Grown sustainably by a small-but-mighty estate, 80% of which is planted to Gruner, run by 4th-gen winemaker Mathias Ruttenstock.
I'm sure you didn't expect to go that deep into a wine under $15... but this is Austrian wine week! Let's learn a thing or two with our glass of Gruner.
So that’s the gist of ‘who, what, where and how’, and as for when to break it open… well, now. Asap. Maybe especially with friends at said cook out. Seriously, fried chicken and potato salad rule with Gruner. Hello… Wiener Schnitzel. Case and point. But I go with chicken wings and Gruner often. Asian food is also the ideal Austrian white pairing. In the same vein of fried food, Shrimp or Veggie Tempura would be a fresh take. Sounds like our Friday night plans and menu are set!
