15% alc, 8.5 g/l rs. What separates Sant’Antonio’s Amarone from the pack, apart from the insanely good price of course? Well, Sant’Antonio’s Amarone grapes are usually picked in the first couple of weeks of September, two weeks earlier than most. Sant’Antonio’s fruit is therefore fresher than most other producers’. This really shows in the wine, giving this Amarone a bright lift that I don’t often find in others, especially at this price! Additionally, most Amarone producers use big barrels, mostly Slavonian oak for ageing. Paolo realized that French oak actually works much better, with finer grained barrels making the wine smoother and rounder, with sweeter tannins. Sant’Antonio also chose to focus on quality not quantity when it comes to their fruit, opting for organic hands off farming, and high density vine plantings. The roots dig deep for nutrients and water, resulting low yields of top quality fruit.
The 2016 Selezione Amarone is a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina, and 5% Oseleta, from 20-25 year old vines. The wine is aged for over 2 years in mostly used barrels. The resulting wine shows wonderful maturity upon release, an evolved Amarone that is drinking great now and can age for years as well. Aromas of ripe red plum and cherry jam mix with spicy fragrances of licorice, black pepper and an oh so enticing hint of dark chocolate that really tickles the senses. Rich and flavorful in the mouth, a bounty of dark red fruits surrounds a meaty backbone of firm round tannins. This Amarone has impeccable balance and elegance too. There’s a freshness and pep from its superior acidity that makes for ideal drinking now, with the potential to age for another 10 years or more.
Sant' Antonio Description
“The 2017 vintage, characterized by a generally warm climate, nonetheless maintains the freshness and the typical Mediterranean style of Cervaro della Sala. The nose offers perceptible notes of chamomile and flint. The palate is savory with the characteristic and delicate sensations of vanilla and butter which meld gracefully into hints of tropical fruit to compose a well-defined bouquet. The wine is still young, but will be able to evolve well for years to come as well.” Winery note

"The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Antonio Castagnedi is dusty and floral, with black cherries lifted by smoky crushed stone. This impresses further with undeniably elegant textures, silky and refined, more savory than sweet and with a saturation of primary fruits. Plums, blackberries, minerals and brown spice can all be found, as the 2017 comes across as powerful and elegant. This is a tamed beast of an Amarone with depths of intensity and full of character as it tapers off balsamic, lightly structured and spicy. Wow, and at a balanced 15% abv. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2033."

Packaged in a heavy glass bottle, the Tenuta Sant'Antonio Famiglia Castagnedi 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Campo dei Gigli reveals a very savory character with dried fruit, lots of plum and spicy back notes that transition to tarry smoke and barbecue. The wine is full-bodied and slightly evolved due to the hot vintage conditions. It sports a powerful 16% alcohol content. It aged in new tonneaux for three years. Production is 25,000 bottles.
Decanter
“Citrus, cream and white flowers on the nose lead seamlessly onto the palate, where you'll find pear and melon with a touch of under-ripe pineapple and cool stone fruits. It has good acidity, minerality and savoury complexity, with excellent balance and a long, sleek, saline finish.” Decanter on 2015
