What separates Sant’Antonio’s Amarone from the pack, apart from the insanely good price of course? Well, Sant’Antonio’s Amarone grapes are usually picked in the first couple of weeks of September, two weeks earlier than most. Sant’Antonio’s fruit is therefore fresher than most other producers’. This really shows in the wine, giving this Amarone a bright lift that I don’t often find in others, especially at this price! Additionally, most Amarone producers use big barrels, mostly Slavonian oak for ageing. Paolo realized that French oak actually works much better, with finer grained barrels making the wine smoother and rounder, with sweeter tannins. Sant’Antonio also chose to focus on quality not quantity when it comes to their fruit, opting for organic hands off farming, and high density vine plantings. The roots dig deep for nutrients and water, resulting low yields of top quality fruit.
The 2019 Selezione Amarone is a blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina, and 5% Oseleta, from 20-25 year old vines. The wine is aged for over 2 years in mostly used barrels. The resulting wine shows wonderful maturity upon release, an evolved Amarone that is drinking great now and can age for years as well. Aromas of ripe red plum and cherry jam mix with spicy fragrances of licorice, black pepper and an oh so enticing hint of dark chocolate that really tickles the senses. Rich and flavorful in the mouth, a bounty of dark red fruits surrounds a meaty backbone of firm round tannins. This Amarone has impeccable balance and elegance too. There’s a freshness and pep from its superior acidity that makes for ideal drinking now, with the potential to age for another 10 years or more.

"The 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella Antonio Castagnedi is darkly alluring, with a seductive blend of black cherries and crushed violet candies giving way to a dusting of cocoa. This is silky smooth, nearly creamy yet lifted in feel, with ripe red fruits contrasted by a tinge of bitter balsamic spice. This tapers off with youthful tension, leaving a coating of grippy tannins that are nicely offset by a bump of residual acidity. There’s lovely balance within the 2019 that makes this an excellent option for the dinner table but will also promote aging. It clocks in at just 15% alcohol as well. Gorgeous." Vinous
