If you’re looking for classic American Zinfandel then look no further. Vintage after vintage Seghesio produces some of the very best Zinfandel to be found in California. Their Sonoma Zinfandel has scored 90-93 pts from the Wine Spectator for the last seven vintages in a row, now that’s consistent!
Seghesio Family Vineyards’ roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel, as their founder, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted this historic varietal at their Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. With 120 years of grape growing experience, and some of the best old vine fruit in California at their disposal, it’s no wonder that they manage to produce such top quality wines. Every year, they bring in approximately 35 lots of Zinfandel averaging 25-30 years in age. Each of these lots is produced under the careful eye of their winemaker, Ted Seghesio. The best of these lots are selected to make the Sonoma Zinfandel (in 2013 this was mostly Alexander Valley and Dry Creek fruit). A small amount of Petite Sirah is blended in the wine for added complexity. The wine is aged in mostly used barrels to preserve the purity of the old vine fruit.
This vintage showcases the classic spicy, lush black fruit typical of Alexander Valley. This is balanced with the cooler climate Dry Creek Valley fruit, bringing more briary raspberry flavors along with good acidity that adds to the structure. The splash of petite sirah and touch of oak gives the wine good depth, smooth layers of round tannins, and just a touch of pepper and spice. Ribs and Zin is the perfect match, but you could pair this with rich pasta dishes too, spicy Italian sausage, the options are endless.
