This gem features an uncommon level of complexity and richness for a Kabinett level Riesling. The secret? At harvest, the juice was technically measured at the Spatlese level. For those newer to the German classification, these terms reflect the measurement of the sugar content in the grape juice before fermentation. Higher potential alcohol, yes, but also higher levels of the compounds that give wine its structure and complexity.
Voila!
Squirrel these away for a few years to develop…
The whisper of residual sugar gives this wine the chops to pair with lightly spicy food. Things like curry are all the rage as a pairing, but be careful... too much spice and you will overwhelm the delicate flavors. Again, i would look to the local menus for inspiration. Popping into the Topinambur Restaurant down the street… Pike-perch in a dill cream sauce… salmon poached in sparkling wine served with a lime cream sauce… pork schnitzel with a mushroom cream sauce… (yes, I know I used this for their trocken Riesling... if it works, it works!)
James Suckling: 95 Points
“Wonderfully peachy and juicy, but with a fantastic balance that’s only just the other side of dry. Then the intense slatey minerality builds and builds at the dangerously refreshing, super-focused finish. Maybe at the beginning you sense a touch of grape sweetness, but this ends decisively dry.” JS
Wine Advocate: 93 Points
“The 2022 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett opens with a very elegant and finely flinty bouquet of weathered slate. Mouth-filling, vital and with nervous mineral grip and tension, this is a lightweight but lush wine to be cellared for at least three more years.” WA
