This is a throwback to the heady days when Australian Shiraz ruled the import market. Big, rich and slightly over-the-top! Kind of like The Judge...
The Judge. As in The Honourable George Shinas, a judge in his hometown of Mildura, Australia. (pop. 32,738) He is the 8th generation farming his family’s small estate. With his solid day job, winemaking isn’t his livelihood. And with just 8,000 cases produced, how could it be? No, The Judge makes wine because his family always has. And it gives him an excuse to travel the world!
His partner in crime is winemaker Stephen Black. You may know him as the mad genius behind the Small Gully wines. Here he turns his attention to the Judge's juice, sourced from vines as old as 70 years. The wine is aged a whopping 24 months in seasoned French oak barrels, resulting in a silky-smooth finish and uncommon complexity at this price point. The prettiness of violet and vanilla; the work of dense, ripe, inky plum; the foundation of firm, grainy tannin. It’s a well-built house, fitted and decorated. Fine-grained tannins give shape to the long, sappy finish.
