This beautiful white is as charming as that name makes it sound! A lovely garden of generous tropical and orchard fruits on the nose – Asian pear, melon, and a hint of banana are surrounded by peppery Gruner spice and an appealing touch of fresh herbs. The palate comes together in a way that is beautifully focused, with a gorgeous acidity driving this to a long, beautiful, lingering finish. With good viscosity, this has just a touch more body than most Gruners in this price range, while the acidity keeps everything fresh and lively. There’s a delicious chalky minerality here too, adding complexity, while Gruner’s signature white pepper spice reemerges on the finish, making this a terrific food wine.
And how about those awesome food pairing abilities? If you’ve not delved into the possibilities here, let me be the first to remind you – Gruner is one of the most ultra-food-friendly grape varieties on the planet. Tricky vegetables – asparagus and brussel sprouts especially – all love Gruner. In my somewhat humble opinion, its the only grape that universally works with artichokes. Basically, Gruner makes all the vegetables taste better. Everything seafood, too. Lentils and whole grains like quinoa, too, go well with Gruner’s savory edge. Not feeling that healthy? That’s okay...don’t even get me started on how awesome this wine is with all things out of the fryer...chicken, shrimp, fried oysters – you name it! And remember, this is the signature wine of the good folks who invented Wiener Schnitzel!!
All that being said, this is still absolutely terrific paired with just an evening on the porch or Netflix on the couch.
