Here’s the review for the wine… a bottle found its way into my stash, and I knew nothing about it. With its simple Vin de France appellation, I knew it could be anywhere from cheap to fancy. And it wasn't really from California, like the name (Blond Lands) made me think!
It says Sauvignon on the label, so I knew the grape. And Martine’s listed as the importer, which made me figure it was expensive.
And that’s all I knew.
I opened a bottle and was simply blown away.
Explosive aromas of honeysuckle and peaches belie the tingly citrus fruit and vibrant acidity that balances the wine. Dancing across my tongue, the finish was at once clean and yet intense and lingering. A tight-wire walk between Sauvignon Blanc’s lean, austere side and it’s tropical flamboyant self, this beauty of a bottle effortlessly moved from aperitif to the main course of roasted chicken.
I thought, “This is what Sancerre should taste like!” Full and ripe and rich, yet acidic and crisp and clean.
I logged into our system to check the price… then I promptly emailed the distributor, “How much do you have? How much for all of it?”
The wine comes from the easternmost part of the Touraine region in the Loire Valley. Not much help, as “Touraine” is such a large region that there is no uniform style or quality. But Henry Marionnet, whose family has owned the Domaine de la Charmoise since 1850, cares little for appellation or prestige. He just makes good wine. Milder than the famed Sancerre in both summers and winters, the vines enjoy a long growing season to achieve perfect ripeness. A mixture of soils adds to the complexity of the wine: flint for minerality; clay for richness.
You can pay me more if you like… but I suggest you just load up and enjoy through the next few months of warm weather.
