100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero… at this price?!?! Torremorón is made by the small village of Quintanamanvirgo, well situated in the north central area of Ribera. I say made by the village, and not a winery, because there are only two businesses in this booming village of 94 people – the bar and the winery! (Yes, 94 people!) And nearly everyone works for the winery (and drinks at the bar!).
80-100 years old, the vines' naturally low yield (5 or 6 bunches per vine) results in concentrated, complex juice. The people of the village contribute as well, taking care to harvest the grapes at night, when the temperature is cool and the grapes have their highest acidity. Not uncommon for white wines (especially in New Zealand), this approach is almost unheard of for red. But it is critical for the balance of the wine, as the acidity provides a crisp counterpoint to the juicy, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit.
To top it all off, the wine is aged entirely in stainless steel, making Torremorón one of the most pure expressions of Tempranillo that you’ll come across! Thanks to the lack of oak, you can spice things up when pairing with this wine - Thai beef salad, marinated Korean BBQ pork, Peking duck and meat or chicken dishes with a piquant play of spices.
