Argentina. Yes, this Rhone-styled blend is from Argentina... why Argentina? Because I cannot find this level of quality for the price anywhere else!
Back in 2012 the pioneering Eduardo Soler planted 15 acres of Garnacha at 3600 ft in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. This was a pretty bold move considering Argentine powerhouses such as Catena Zapata and Zuccardi were already getting massive scores and $50-$100+ a bottle for pretty much any Malbec they grew in this region. But Eduardo persisted, inspired by the mountain grown Garnachas of Sierra de Gredos that he fell in love with living in Spain. Almost ten years later and Ver Sacrum’s wines are receiving growing critical acclaim, but thankfully they aren’t selling for $50+ a bottle yet!
Eduardo co-ferments 70% Garnacha, 15% Monastrell and 15% Syrah before aging in a combination of concrete eggs and neutral oak barrels to preserve the purity of this high mountain fruit. The nose is earthy and muddled with hints of blackberry and cherry luden with under notes of forest floor, tea leaf and thyme. The palate is juicy and lush with black fruits, currant, and fine grained tannins that lead to a light finish of clove and cinammon. It's great at room temperature, but don’t be afraid to give it a little chill, a refreshing red for 90+ degree heat, and your know those days are coming… What to pair? Burgers on the grill work great. Or you can go with lighter fare, seared tuna, poached salmon, or even simple salad.
