Carnuntum, where Glatzer is located, is red-wine country, so what is going on here? Let's just call it our little secret. The dense soils give way to crystaline whites. I find Glatzer’s wine compelling because as much as he is a “serious” winemaker, he hasn’t forgotten that wine is meant to be delicious! Too many winemakers have swung the pendulum towards austere and unforgiving wines that require a thesauraus and a translator to understand. Not Walter Glatzer. And in 2017, boy has he delivered on the “delicious” quotient. Hints of jasmine on the nose lead into a creamy style of GV, almost Chablis-like, with focused citrus flavors and a classic white pepper finish.
"[Walter Glatzer is] a hearty kind of fellow, and his wines are nothing if not extremely friendly, but this doesn’t arise from a choice to be “unpretentious.” Glatzer seems to be missing whatever DNA-strand is responsible for high solemnity, or whatever it is that tempts people to strut. At one point I might also have seen them as charming “little” wines, and defended their virtues—as I still would. But today I think they have a richer claim to stake. Far from being “little” wines, I believe Glatzer’s wines show that substance is certainly compatible with deliciousness, and that too many growers have ventured too far from basic sensuality when they form their wines." The bottom line is this is delicious. But that doesn't mean simple or without character. You can geek out on the subtleties if you want... but don't say I didn't warn you when you look and realize the bottle was drained all too fast!
